Basic Meaning: fallacious reason
Senses:
Pseudo-reason; faulty reason. In Buddhist logic 因明, an incorrect reason applied in a syllogism (Skt. hetv-ābhāsa). One of the three possible faulty components of a syllogism, the other two being the pseudo-thesis 似宗 and pseudo-example 似喩. Because of the ambiguity of the meaning of
'reason,'
some of these fallacies are related to the minor premise, and some to the major premise. The logic texts indicate fourteen different ways that the reason can be fallacious 因十四過, and these are broken down into three groups of: (1) four kinds of incomplete reasons 四不成, (2) six kinds of uncertain reasons 六不定過, and (3) four kinds of contradictory reasons 四相違. Valid, inconclusive, and contradictory reasons are analyzed into nine types 九句因.
