似能立

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: seemingly valid proposition

Senses:

  • Pseudo-tenable. In Buddhist logic, a proposition that is seemingly valid but faulty; one of the eight approaches 八門 contained in the two objects of making-aware 二悟 (Skt. sādhanâbhāsa, sādhv-ācābhāsa; Tib. sgrub ngag ltarsnang). Pseudo-propositions are faulty in two main ways: (1) faults of omission 缺過 where one of the three parts of the syllogism (thesis , reason , example ) are missing; (2) faults in logic 支過, where one of the three parts of the syllogism contains an error. One common account of these lists nine kinds of faults in the thesis (called 宗九過 or 似宗九過), fourteen in the reason (called 因十四過 or 似因十四過), and ten in the example (called 喩十過 or 似喩十過), which comes to a total of thirty three 三十三過. The opposite of a valid proposition 眞能立. 〔因明正理門論本 T 1628.32.3b8; 入正理論〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, YBh-Ind]
