Basic Meaning: Gayākāśyapa
Senses:
The youngest of the three Kāśyapa brothers 三迦葉 who were close disciples of Śākyamuni. Gayā refers to the name of his birthplace. He was a brother of Mahākāśyapa, originally a fire-worshipper, one of the eleven foremost disciples of the Buddha. In the Lotus Sutra it is predicted that he will become Samantaprabhāsa Buddha.

In esoteric Buddhism he is a figure in the Court of Omniscience 遍知院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅, placed to the left of the Sarva-tathāgata-jñāna-mudrā 一切如來智印. He is depicted as an Indian figure seated on a mat with his right hand extending outward and his left hand clutching the edge of his robe. Seed syllable: he (derived from hetu). Mudrā: palm-leaf scripture mudrā 梵篋印. He is the brother of Uruvilvākāśyapa 優樓頻羅迦葉 on the opposite side.
