Basic Meaning: Buddha-nature Treatise
Senses:
The Foxing lun, 4 fasc.; T 1610.31.787a1–813a. Dubiously attributed to Vasubandhu 世親, translated by Paramârtha 眞諦 in the Chen 陳 dynasty, during 557–569 CE, at Zhizhisi 制旨寺. This treatise discusses the theory of the Buddha-nature in great detail in sixteen chapters, from the four aspects of:
- dependent arising;
- breaking attachment;
- manifestation of essence; and
- discriminated aspects.
In the course of explaining how it is that all sentient beings have the buddha-nature, the mistaken views of non-Buddhists 外道 and lesser-vehicle practitioners 小乘 are refuted. The author cites extensively from the Śrīmālā-sūtra 勝鬘經, the Lotus Sutra 法華經 and the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra 瑜伽師地論. (Skt. *Buddha-dhātu-śāstra, *Buddhatva-śāstra
