Basic Meaning: Sutra of the Collection of the Past Activities of the Buddha

  • The Fo benxingji jing (Buddha-carita-saṃgrāha); trans. Jñānagupta 闍那崛多; 60 fasc. T 190.3.655a-932a. The most comprehensive collection of biographies of the Buddha available in Chinese, which also includes biographies of the leading disciples, including Kāśyapa 迦葉, Śāriputra 舍利弗, Maudgalyāyana 目犍連. Abbreviated as 本行經 and 本行集經. Hirakawa also suggests *Abhiniṣkramaṇa-sūtra.1

    1. Samuel Bealʼs introduction to his translation of this work, called “The Romantic Legend of Sākya Buddha,” shows that the identification as “Abhiniṣkramaṇa Sūtra” was made by an obscure mid-19th century French or Russian scholar called W. Wassilieff in a French work called “Le Bouddhisme.” Judging from the title that Beal gave to his translation, and his observation that "It must be borne in mind, however, that several translations of the 'Legend of Buddha' are quoted under the name Fo-pen-hing." (p. v-vi.), he was aware that Fo benxingji jing does not mean “Abhiniṣkramaṇa Sūtra.” Nevertheless, he must have been misled by Wassillief and assumed: "It would seem from a consideration of the title of the seventeenth chapter, 'Leaving the palace for a religious life,' " that originally the story of the “Abhiniṣkramaṇa” was simply that of Buddhaʼs flight from his palace to become an ascetic. Afterwards, the same title was applied to the complete legend (as in the present work), which includes his previous and subsequent history. (Beal, 1875: v-vi). [Note by Nyanatusita] [back]
