Basic Meaning: three scriptures of the buddhas and patriarchs
Senses:
Three key texts of Chan 禪 which include the Sutra in Forty-Two Chapters 四十二章經 (T 784), Sutra of the Deathbed Injunction 佛遺教經 (T 389) and Weishan jingce 溈山警策. By the Northern Song 北宋 (960–1127) period the concept existed as Chan Master Shousui 守遂禪師 wrote individual commentaries for each. However, the version of the Sutra in Forty-Two Chapters used displays Chan influences and modifications. [Jeffrey Kotyk; source(s): FGD]
