Basic Meaning: Fojian chanshi yulu

Senses:

  • The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Fojian; abbreviated as 佛鑑錄. A collection of teachings by Southern Song Chan master Wuzhun Shifan 無準師範 (1178–1249), who was granted the honorific title of 'Chan Master Buddhaʼs Mirror'  佛鑑禪師 by the Song imperial court in the first month of 1239 (Z 121.891.a16–18). First printed 1251, the collection was compiled by fifteen disciples. It includes records of sermons and dialogues from his five abbatial positions, smaller convocations 小參, dharma instructions 法語 written to disciples and patrons, general sermons 普說, vernacular responses to 'raising ancient [cases]'  拈古, verses 'eulogizing ancient [cases]'  頌古, occasional poems as 'Chinese gāthā'  偈頌, encomia , verses for funeral 小佛事, as well as prefaces and colophons 䟦 composed by the master. Appended after the printerʼs colophon is 'Prayer Text by Grand Minister You [Si 游似]'  大丞相游公祭文. A separate fascicle records a ritual performed within the imperial palace for the benefit of the patron Emperor Lizong 理宗 in 1233 at the end of the three-month summer retreat 安居 at the newly restored monastery at Jingshan 徑山; as well as a biographic record 行狀 composed by Wuwen Daocan 無文道燦 (1213–1271). Other biographical records survive elsewhere.

    The modern reprint is divided into two texts, entitled Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Wuzhun shifan 無準師範禪師語錄 (5 fasc.) and Recorded Sayings of Venerable Wuzhun in Response to the Emperor 無準和尙奏對語錄 (1 fasc.), in Dai Nihon zokuzōkyō, vol. 121; Shinsan ed. vol. 70, no. 1382 and no. 1383. Although the first five fascicles were reproduced separately from the sixth fascicle, the table of contents enumerates all six fascicles. According to Shiina (2013), this text was based on a Gozan edition, and compared with a later Edo edition from 1642.

    Two copies survive from the original Southern Song edition bearing a preface and a printerʼs colophon (bearing the 'donors' inscription) both dated 1251. The contents were arranged into four fascicles. This same format appears in an early Gozan edition with a printerʼs colophon dated 1370, reproduced in Gozan ban Chūgoku zenseki sōkan vol. 7. Shiina (2013) reports that the 1370 Gozan edition is a faithful reproduction of the original Southern Song recension; however, it omits the 1251 printerʼs colophon and adds running page numbers. The contents and sequence largely are the same as the Zokuzōkyō edition, though subdivided into six fascicles. Kawase (1970) reports another earlier Gozan edition, subdivided into three fascicles.

    Per Shiina (1993), the Japanese Imperial Household Kunaichō collection as well as Tōfukuji 東福寺 each possess a copy struck from Southern Song woodblocks. Shiina (2013) also notes significant lacunae were repaired by manuscript. Between the two copies, the entire printed Song edition is represented.
