Basic Meaning: faith and practice

Senses:

  • Believing action; faith and practice. Action resulting from faith in anotherʼs teaching (also called 隨信行), in contrast with action resulting from direct apprehension of the doctrine 法行 (隨法行) (adhimukti-caryā). The former is found among those of dull faculties 鈍根, the latter among those of sharp spiritual faculties 利根 (Skt. śraddhânusārin, adhimokṣa, ādhimokṣika). 〔四教儀註, 教行信證, 正法眼藏〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Ui, Soothill, Hirakawa]
  • Xinxing (540–594); founder of the Three Levels teaching 三階教 movement. He entered the saṃgha at the age of seventeen and devoted himself to the study of the Huayan jing 華嚴經 and scriptures. He became a follower of Pure Land 淨土 Buddhism at an early stage, and from this gradually formulated his concept of the three stages. He devoutly observed the precepts and had many clerical and lay followers. His writings include Sanjiewei bieji lu 三階位別集錄 (3 fascicles), Duigen qixing zalu 對根起行雜錄 (33 fascicles), the Sanjie fofa 三階佛法 (4 fascicles), and at least ten other titles. He is known as Da Xinxing chanshi 大信行禪師. [Jamie Hubbard]
