Basic Meaning: Shuzenji
Senses:
A Sōtō school 曹洞宗 temple located in Shizuoka Prefecture 靜岡縣. The temple was originally founded by Kōrin 杲鄰, a disciple of Kūkai 空海, in 798. In the middle of the thirteenth century, the Chinese monk Lanxi Daolong 蘭溪道隆 was appointed abbot, and the temple became affiliated with the Rinzai School 臨濟宗. In the late fifteenth century, it returned its affiliation to the Sōtō school under Ryūkei Hanjō 隆溪繁紹. Shuzenji is famous in Japanese history as the site where the shogun Minamoto Yoritomoʼs brother Minamoto Noriyori 源範賴 was assassinated in 1193. The temple burned down in 1863. The current temple was rebuilt in 1887. Also called Keikokusanji 桂谷山寺, Shōrosan 肖廬山, and Sōtōsan 走湯山. [Matthew McMullen; source(s): Iwanami, JEBD, FGD, Ui]
