Basic Meaning: *Saṃghabhara

Senses:

  • (460-?) Or perhaps *Saṃghavara or *Saṃghavarman, Ch. Zhongkai 衆鎧 ( 'Armor of the Saṃgha' ), translator active in modern Nanjing, then the capital of the Liang, from c. 506 to 520 or 524. Collaborator of *Mandra[sena] 曼陀羅仙. Like the latter, said to be from Funan 夫南國 (usually identified with some part of modern Cambodia). Credited with the translation of the The Prajñāpāramitā as Taught by Mañjuśrī 文殊師利所說般若波羅蜜經 T 233, a translation of the Śaptaśatikā prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom in 700 Lines, see Conze, The Prajñāpāramitā Literature, Munshiram Manoharlal reprint of 2000, p. 58) (cf. T 232, with the same title, by his sometime collaborator *Mandra[sena]); 大乘十法經 T 314 the Daśadharmaka-sūtra; 度一切諸佛境界智嚴經 T 358 *Sarva-buddha-viṣayâvatāra-jñānâlokâlaṃkāra-sūtra; 八吉祥經 T 430 *Aṣṭabuddhaka?; 文殊師利問經 T 468 Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā (Sutra of the Questions of Mañjuśrī); 大乘寶雲經 T 659 a version of the Mahāyānaratnameghasūtra attributed to his joint translatorship with 僧伽婆羅 *Mandra[sena] (but cf. T 658 for a version of the same text attributed to *Mandra[sena] alone); 孔雀王呪經 T 984 Mahāmāyūrī [vidyārājñī]; 舍利弗陀羅尼經 T 1016 *Ananta-mukha-[sādhaka]-dhāraṇī; 菩薩藏經 T 1491; 解脫道論 T 1648 Vimuktimārga[?], *Vimukti-mārga-dhātu-guṇa-nirdeśa (HBGR editors add Pāli Vimuttimagga, *Visuddhimagga?) by Upatissa; 阿育王經 T 2043 Aśokarājasūtra? (See Hôbôgirin Répertoire s.v.). Note that the *Vimuktimārga/Vimuttimagga T 1648 has been translated from Saṃghabharaʼs Chinese by Ehara et al. (see below). An earlier translation also apparently exists, entitled The Path of Freedom, Written by the Arahant Upatissa Who was Called Great Light in Ryo [=Liang]; Translated in Ryo by Tipitaka Sanghapala of Funan (publisher unknown, 1936). 〔續高僧傳 T 2060.50.425c22, 高僧傳 T 2059.50.345b9
