Basic Meaning: Sutra on the Conduct of the Five Precepts for Male Lay Practitioners

  • The Youposai wujie weiyi jing. 1 fasc., K 536, T 1503. Translation by Guṇavarman 求那跋摩; 8th year of Yuanjia 元嘉, Liu Song 劉宋 dynasty (431) in Zhiyuan Monastery 祇洹寺.1 Nanjō 1083; Ono. 1:224b. Also known as Pusa youposai wujie weiyi jing 菩薩優婆塞五戒威儀經 and Wujie weiyi jing 五戒威儀經. A Vinaya work that focuses on the explanation of the five precepts 五戒 followed by adult male lay practitioners (upasaka), addressing the need for them to avoid the four bodily unwholesome behaviors 身四惡, the five oral unwholesome behaviors 口五惡, the five kinds of wrong livelihood 五邪命, the five kinds of adornment 五事 and so forth. The early part of the text is basically the same as the as the sections on the four pārājikas 四波羅夷, forty offenses 四十違犯, five merits 五功德 of upholding the precepts, methods of undertaking vows 自誓受法 of the Dichi jieben 地持戒本 (T 1501). The latter portion deals with the methods of repentance 懺悔法, the vows for the forty-five days of forest retreat 阿蘭若行, and so forth.
