Basic Meaning: Uruvilvākāśyapa
Senses:
The eldest of the three Kāśyapas 三迦葉 who were close disciples of Śākyamuni who at one time lived in the village of Uruvilvā in Magadha. Also written 優樓頻螺迦葉 and translated as 木瓜林. In esoteric Buddhism he is a figure in the Court of Omniscience 遍知院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅, placed to the right of the Sarva-tathāgata-jñāna-mudrā 一切如來智印. He is depicted as an Indian monk in robes with his palms placed together, seated on a mat. He was the chief of fire worshippers before becoming the Buddhaʼs disciple. This appears to be why he is placed next to the Sarva-tathāgata-jñāna-mudrā, which has associations with fire. Seed syllable: he (derived from hetu). Mudrā: palm-leaf scripture mudrā 梵篋印. Mantra: namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ hetupratyayavigata karmanirjāta hūṃ. He is the brother of Gayākāśyapa 伽耶迦葉 on the opposite side. References:
