  • (1197–1276. ); also written 兀庵普寧. Chinese monk of Yangqi 楊岐派 branch of the Linji (J. Rinzai) school 臨濟宗 during the Southern Song, originally from Chengdu 成都. Founder of the Gottan Branch 兀菴派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1260, but left Japan in 1265 after the death of Hōjō Tokiyori.
