Basic Meaning: hall-entering manners

Senses:

  • The manners 威儀 for entering the meditation hall. According to the Chanyuan qinggui 禪苑淸規, when monks are entering the hall from the front they must enter left leg first through the southern side of the door. To show respect to the abbot they must not enter through the north side. When monks are entering from the rear door to sit in the upper section, they must enter through the north side of the door, left leg first. Those that enter through the rear door to sit in the lower section, must enter through the south side of the door, right leg first. After entering, the monks must bow to the 'sacred monk'  聖僧 and take their seat. 「入堂之法、前門入者、竝從南頰入先擧左足、所以不從北頰入者、尊住持人也後門入者、上間坐、卽北頰入、先擧左足、下閒坐、卽南頰入、先擧右足、於聖僧前問訊詑坐」 〔禪苑淸規一、赴粥飯〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT, Yokoi, Nakamura, FGD]
