Basic Meaning: two schools

Senses:

  • Two divisions of Buddhism in the early Joseon period in Korea. The Seon school, which emphasized meditation and the Gyo (doctrinal) school, which emphasized scriptural study. Due to strict governmental policies, these two were eventually forced to combine into one main school of Korean Buddhism, represented by the Jogye 曹溪 school. [Charles Muller]
