Basic Meaning: two schools
Senses:
Two divisions of Buddhism in the early Joseon period in Korea. The Seon 禪 school, which emphasized meditation and the Gyo 教 (doctrinal) school, which emphasized scriptural study. Due to strict governmental policies, these two were eventually forced to combine into one main school of Korean Buddhism, represented by the Jogye 曹溪 school. [Charles Muller]
