Basic Meaning: eight ranks

Senses:

  • The classification or grades of disciples according to the Tiantai 圓教 perfect teaching, i.e.
    1. 觀行卽 grade of the five classes, or stages, of lay disciples;
    2. 相似卽 grade of the ten classes of or ordinary monks and nuns; above these are the 分眞卽 bodhisattva stages of those progressing towards Buddhahood i.e.
    3. 十住,
    4. 十行,
    5. 十廻向,
    6. 十地,
    7. 等覺, and
    8. the perfect or Buddha stage 究竟卽, i.e. 妙覺.

  • Eight stages of life (Skt. aṣṭâvasthā). According to the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra, Manobhūmiḥ section (T 1579.30.289a19-22; for Skt. see Bhattacharya 1957, p. 49, lines 7–11). The following make up the eight stages of the human life, from initial conception, to death:
    1. Embryonic Stage 處胎位 (Skt. garbhâvasthā)
    2. Stage of Birth 出生位 (jātâvasthā)
    3. Stage of Infancy 嬰孩位 (dahrâvasthā)
    4. Stage of Childhood 童子位 (kumārakâvasthā)
    5. Stage of Youth 少年位 (yuvâvasthā)
    6. Stage of Middle Age 中年位 (madhyâvasthā)
    7. Stage of Old Age 老年位 (vṛddhyâvasthā)
    8. Stage of Advanced Old Age 耄熟位 (ūrdhvaṃ jīrṇâvasthā)
