Basic Meaning: Outline of the Eight Schools
Senses:
The Hasshū kōyō, by the Kamakura period Kegon scholar Gyōnen 凝然. 2 fasc. completed in 1268 (when Gyōnen was 29). A broad introductory sketch which gives the history, doctrine and major teachers of the eight schools 八宗 that were transmitted to form Nara Buddhism in Japan; the final section includes brief summaries of Chan 禪宗 and Pure Land 淨土宗 in addition to the eight doctrinal schools. Popular as an introduction to Buddhism for serious students in Japan down to the present day. This work, while valuable as a source of facts, contains a bias in that it omits the discussion of Korea in the transmission of Buddhism from China to Japan. Translated into English by Leo Pruden in the Numata project with the title Essentials of the Eight Traditions. [Charles Muller, Stephane Aubry, Iwanami]
