Basic Meaning: eight wrong kinds of behavior
Senses:
The eight kinds of behavior that are to be corrected in the practice of the eightfold path 八正道. Also called 八邪支, 八邪法 and 八邪: (1) wrong view 邪見; at the most basic level, not seeing the law of cause and effect; (2) wrong thinking 邪思/邪思惟; thinking of desires, harm, pride and other afflictive modes; (3) wrong speech 邪語, which includes lying 妄語, treachery 兩舌, slander 惡口, flattery 綺語, and so forth; (4) wrong behavior 邪業, including killing 殺生, stealing 不與取, debauchery 邪淫, and so forth; (5) wrong livelihood 邪命, which means to make a living as a butcher, weapons salesman, etc. (6) wrong effort 邪方便/邪精進, which means not making an effort to change oneʼs habituation towards afflictive behavior; (7) wrong mindfulness 邪念, which means to keep unwholesome thoughts in the mind: (8) wrong concentration 邪定, which means to engage in deviant forms of practices of concentration.
