Basic Meaning: six kinds of tolerance

Senses:

  • Six types of tolerance attained by bodhisattvas. These are articulated in the Yingluo jing 瓔珞經, and adopted into the Tiantai system for explaining the stages of development of the bodhisattvas of the distinct teaching 別教菩薩:
    1. the tolerance based on faith 信忍 is to the belief in the emptiness of all things cultivated by bodhisattvas of the distinct teaching in the stages of the ten abodes 十住;
    2. the tolerance based on dharmas 法忍 is the realization of provisionality of all concepts by bodhisattvas of the distinct teaching in the stages of the ten practices 十行;
    3. the tolerance based on practice 修忍 is to practice the middle path and to learn that both phenomena and principle are mutually interpenetrating, the is accomplished by these same bodhisattvas in the stages of the ten dedications of merit 十迴向;
    4. the tolerance gained from correctness 正忍 is when, at the level of the ten grounds 十地 they clearly understand the correct meaning of the middle path;
    5. the immaculate tolerance 無垢忍 is when, at the level of virtual enlightenment 等覺 they fully experience the undefiled pure mind;
    6. in the tolerance of omniscience 一切智忍 they attain omniscience in the fruition stages 妙覺, eliminating the twelve classes of affliction and fully apprehend the middle path.
