Basic Meaning: six periods of worship
Senses:
Homage paid to Amitâbha at the six periods of the day at night. This is a practice that was initiated by Shandao 善導 in his Wangsheng lizan jie 往生禮讚偈 where worship is carried out six times a day in the following manner: (1) at sunset, by singing the twelve epithets of Amitâbha, (2) at the beginning of the night by singing Shandaoʼs hymns, (3) in the middle of the night by singing Nāgârjunaʼs 龍樹 hymns, (4) at the end of the night by singing Vasubandhuʼs 世親 hymns, (5) in early morning by singing Yancongʼs 彦琮 hymns, and (6) at midday by singing Shandaoʼs hymns on the sixteen meditations 十六觀 from the Contemplation Sutra.
