Basic Meaning: six kinds of defiled mind

Senses:

  • As taught in the Awakening of Faith 起信論; also written 六種染心. Although the essence of the mind is originally pure, ignorance arises based on nonenlightenment, and the mind becomes tainted by defilement, which can be seen in six aspects:
    1. defilement where the mind is associated with (i.e. is aware of) attachment 執相應染, or taking the seeming for the real; it is the mark of appropriation 執取相 and 名字相 which is cut off in the final pratyekabuddha and śrāvaka stage and the bodhisattva ten abodes 十住;
    2. defilement where the mind is associated with non-interruption 不斷相應染, where the mind is concomitant with the persisting attraction of the causes of pain and pleasure; it is the mark of continuity 相續相 finally eradicated in the bodhisattva first ground 初地;
    3. defilement where the mind is associated with discriminating wisdom 分別智相應染, which discerns things within and without this world; it is the first mark of discriminating awareness 智相, cut off in the seventh bodhisattva ground 七地;
    4. defilement where the mind is not associated with manifest form 現色不相應染, i.e., defilement of the nescient mind as yet hardly discerning subject from object, of accepting an external world; the third mark of the manifest world 現相 cut of in the eighth bodhisattva ground 八地, the emancipation from the material;
    5. defilement where the mind is not associated with subjective views 能見心不相應染, the second mark, that of the subjective perceiver 轉相, cut of in the ninth bodhisattva ground 九地 of intuition, or emancipation from mental effort; and
    6. defilement where the mind is not associated with fundamental karma 根本業不相應染. The non-interrelated or primary taint of accepting the idea of primal action or activity in the absolute; it is the first of the marks, that of karma 業相, and cut of in the tenth bodhisattva ground 十地, entering on Buddhahood.
