六賊

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: six thieves

Senses:

  • The six faculties 六根 of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin and mind which engender affliction. Or, the six data-fields 六塵 to which these faculties connect. The sense organs are the 媒 'matchmakers,' or medial agents, of the six robbers. The 六賊 are also likened to the six pleasures of the six sense organs. Prevention is by not acting with them, i.e., the eye avoiding beauty, the ear sound, nose scent, tongue flavors, body seductions, and mind uncontrolled thoughts. 〔摩訶止觀 T 1911.46.122b8〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Yokoi, Soothill]
