Basic Meaning: shared derivation

Senses:

  • Created together. Kuiji suggests something additional in giving the example of many lamps giving one light by distinguishing between 共造 and 別造. Claiming that seeming differences in how Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna uses of the term are not significant, he offers the example of two lamps yielding a single light 如二燈共發一光. While the lamps are distinct, separate 別, their combined light is single. But since each has distinct wicks 燈炷, they cast each other in distinct shadows 其影便殊. Similarly a single material thing 色 is formed from the four great elements 四大 in close proximity to each other 大種隣近共造一色.
