Basic Meaning: meditation
Senses:
[瞑想] Quiet contemplation; concentration, meditative concentration (dhyāna). Religious discipline in which the mind is focused on a single point of reference. Traditionally expressed in Buddhist texts as 禪 and 定, also distinguished into the standard pair of śamatha (calm abiding 止) and vipaśyanā (analytical contemplation 觀). Also 參禪, 禪定, 三昧, etc. This is an indigenous term, which can be found in Chinese texts as early as the Zhuangzi. [Ockbae Chun]
