  • (1226–1292). Korean monk from the late Goryeo dynasty and sixth National Teacher of the Suseonsa Society 修禪社 established by Jinul 知訥. Born on November 17th, 1226 in Jeong-an 定安, Chungbuk province, he was originally given the Dharma name Beophwan 法桓, but he later changed it to Chungji and styled himself Mir-am 宓庵. In 1244, at the age of 19, he passed the highest level civil service examination, and was thereupon appointed to the Hallim 翰林, the kingʼs secretariat, and was later sent to Japan as an emissary. When he heard that National Teacher Chunggyeong 冲鏡國師 (1215–1286) was residing at the nearby Seonwonsa 禪源寺 in Gaegyeong, he decided to enter the saṃgha and become his disciple. He later became a lecturer and made a name for himself while residing at Gamnosa 甘露社 in Gimhae. In 1286, after Cheonyeong passed away, Chungji succeeded in his place as patriarch of the Suseonsa Society. He later went to Yanjing 燕京 (present-day Beijing) at the invitation of the Yuan emperor Shizu 世祖 (r.1260–1294). He passed away at the age of 67 on January 10th, 1292. He was given the posthumous name National Teacher Won-gam 圓鑑國師. He was a talented poet and his poetry can be found in Dongmunseon 東文選. His extant writings also include the Jogye Won-gam Guksa eorok 曹溪圓鑑國師語錄, Haedong Jogye jeyukse Wongam Guksa gasong 海東曹溪第六世圓鑑國師歌頌, and Haedong Jogye Mir-am hwasang japjeo 海東曹溪宓庵和尙雜著. the Won-gam Guksa jip 圓鑑國師集 is not extant.
