Basic Meaning: worldling

Senses:

  • A fool, an ignorant person. An unenlightened person, immature being; someone who has no grasp of the Buddhist doctrine (Skt. bāla, Pāli bāla). A person at the mundane 世間 level of cognition and practice. This translation of pṛthag-jana is the earlier one, with Xuangzangʼs rendering being 異生, referring to an ordinary unenlightened person who has not yet grasped the significance of the Four Noble Truths; the opposite of a sage (ārya) 聖者. It is also used in Yogâcāra texts to indicate a practitioner who has not yet entered the path of seeing 見道. Also translated as 愚生, 愚異生, 凡下, and 凡庶, and transliterated as 波羅; 婆羅必栗託仡那; 婆羅必利他伽闍那, 婆羅必哩他仡那. See also 二凡夫.
