Basic Meaning: supramundane paths

Senses:

  • Practices engaged in by those who have already experienced deep insight into reality 聖弟子, such as the four dhyānas 四禪, that aim at rebirth in the seventeen dhyāna heavens of the rūpadhātu 色界十七天. Practices associated with the supramundane path include the four foundations of mindfulness 四念住 and contemplation of the Four Noble Truths 四聖諦 (Deleanu 2012, 158). In the five-level scheme of practices 五位 taught in Abhidharma and Yogâcāra, the first three are considered to be mundane, and the latter three supramundane. 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.292a26〕 (Skt. lokôttareṇa mārgeṇa, lokôttara, anāsrava; Tib.
