Basic Meaning: Descriptions of the Worlds
Senses:
(Skt. Lokanirdeśa). The third chapter of the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya 倶舍論. This chapter discusses the six heavens of the desire realm 六欲天, seventeen heavens of the form realm 色界十七天, and four heavens of the formless realms 無色界 as well as the eight great hells 八大地獄 and four great continents 四大洲 with human inhabitants. This chapter of the Kośa became one of the standard cosmological blueprints followed by many subsequent Buddhist traditions. It differs in numerous particulars from Theravāda cosmology, and is more limited than some of the expanded Mahāyāna cosmologies of infinite buddha-realms in all directions, etc. Vallée-Poussin ignored the 分別 in his French translation, giving the title of the third chapter as “Le Monde”" which Pruden followed, in English “The World.”
