Basic Meaning: Vibhajyavādin

Senses:

  • A school of obscure origins, which is thought to have been established to harmonize the differences between the Sthaviras and Mahāsāṃghikas; their positions are thought to be close to those of the Mahīśāsaka 化地部. The meaning of the term, not necessarily limited to this school, is the method of particularization in dealing with questions in debate. Also translated as 分別論師; transliterated as 毘婆闍婆提. (Tib.
