Basic Meaning: to carve up space
Senses:
This is Vasubandhuʼs 世親 sardonic expression for the attempt by Sarvâstivādin 有部 scholars to divide a moment (by definition, the shortest duration of time), into constituent parts. The Sarvâstivādin scholars determine the duration of a moment by the functioning of eight characteristic marks of the (1) arising of arising 生生, (2) arising 生, (3) abiding of abiding 住住, (4) abiding 住, (5) change 異, (6) change of change 異異, (7) cessation 滅, and (8) cessation of cessation 滅滅. Vasubandhu states that such attempts to divide the moment into parts are as futile as trying to carve up space. Skt. ākāśaṃ pāṭyate [√paṭ] (Pradhan 1967, 76); Tib. mkha' la 'dral ba (Abhidharmakośabhāṣya D 4090: vol. 140, folio/line 81a.6)
