分析虛空

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: to carve up space

Senses:

  • This is Vasubandhuʼs 世親 sardonic expression for the attempt by Sarvâstivādin 有部 scholars to divide a moment (by definition, the shortest duration of time), into constituent parts. The Sarvâstivādin scholars determine the duration of a moment by the functioning of eight characteristic marks of the (1) arising of arising 生生, (2) arising , (3) abiding of abiding 住住, (4) abiding , (5) change , (6) change of change 異異, (7) cessation , and (8) cessation of cessation 滅滅. Vasubandhu states that such attempts to divide the moment into parts are as futile as trying to carve up space.
