Basic Meaning: first turning of the wheel of the Dharma
Senses:
Śākyamuniʼs first sermon, delivered at the Deer Park 鹿野苑, to his five original companions 五比丘. The content of this first teaching was the Four Noble Truths 四諦 concerning suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the way to achieve that cessation through the Eightfold Path 八正道. This is one of the eight major junctures of Śākyamuniʼs teaching career 八相成道 (Skt. dharmacakra-pravartana, *prathama-dharmacakra-pravartana; Pāli dhamma-cakka-pavattana).
