加行

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: application

Senses:

  • Attentiveness; paying attention to; applied practices (Skt. prayoga, prayogika, prāyogika, abhisaṃskāra; Tib. sbyor ba). A few things are implied in this term, the first being the fact that one consciously exerts oneself toward practices of meditation, morality, wisdom, and so forth. The reference is usually to practices undertaken at a relatively early stage, but where one is not a total beginner, having understood the basic framework and goals of Buddhism enough to put them into actual application. When compared with later, more advanced stages (such as the Path of Seeing 見道), the distinction that is made is that since the practices in the later stages are initiated based on some sort of awakening experience, one does not need to consciously force the practice—it happens spontaneously. In the identification of these kinds of practices constituting a distinct stage (加行道 or 加行位), it is one of the five levels of practice 五位 outlined in Abhidharma and Yogâcāra, where it was rendered at an earlier period as the stage of skillful means 方便道. (Skt. *anuyoga, abhiyoga, ābhisaṃskārika, prayukta, prayujyate, prāyogaḥ kṛtaḥ, prāyoga-ja, prāyogatas, prāyoga-mārga, prāyogitva, prāyogin, prahāra, prāyogikatva, vardhayitum, vyavacāraṇa, sāmantaka) 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.315b9, 成唯識論 T 1585.31.5c5〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, YBh-Ind, Yokoi, Hirakawa, Iwanami]
