Basic Meaning: determination
Senses:
Resolve; devoted interest; to be interested in, inclined to. The Chinese translation, which reads more like
'excellent understanding'
can be interpreted to mean that one who has devoted interest in something will gain excellent understanding of it (Skt. adhimukti, adhimokṣa; Tib. mos pa, mospa; Pāli adhimutti). The Cheng weishi lun says:
"The nature of resolve is that of correct ascertainment in regard to an object that is definite. Its function is that of not allowing the object to be doubted. That is, through the power of false or correct teachings, reasoning, or experience, one is certain, and correctly ascertains the object in question. As a consequence, other conditions are unable to change oneʼs mind."
〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.22a15〕
(English rendering from Frances Cookʼs translation of Three Texts on Consciousness-Only, p. 167) (Skt. adhimukta, adhimuktatva, adhimuktika, adhimuktikatā, adhimuktitā, adhimucyamāna, adhivimokṣa, ādhimokṣika, *vimucyate; Pāli adhimokkha) [Stephen Hodge, Charles Muller]
'Verification.'
In Yogâcāra 瑜伽行派, the mental function of making clear exactly what the object is. One of the five object dependent 五別境 mental functions.
