Basic Meaning: best treatise author

Senses:

  • (Skt. vaiśeṣika) In most cases this would indicate a Vaiśeṣika. In the colophon to Dharmaguptaʼs translation of Vasubandhuʼs bhāṣya to the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, however, it is used to indicate Vasubandhu 世親, “the best Treatise author.” 「於大乘部中制述無量。勝論者阿闍梨婆藪槃豆造竟。」 〔攝大乘論釋論 T 1596.31.321a6–7〕 ; "Among the countless Mahāyāna writings, the best treatise author is the ācārya Vasubandhu."
