Basic Meaning: ten approaches to nonduality

Senses:

  • The ten pairs of unified opposites posited by Zhanran 湛然 based on the Lotus Sutra, first explicated in the Fahua xuanyi shiqian 法華玄義釋籤. The unifying principle is that of the identity of contraries, and the ten apparent contraries are:
    1. matter and mind, 色心不二門
    2. internal and external, 內外不二門
    3. practice and realization, 修性不二門
    4. cause and effect, 因果不二門
    5. impurity and purity, 染淨不二門
    6. objective and subjective, 依正不二門
    7. self and other, 自他不二門
    8. action, speech, and thought, 三業不二門
    9. provisional and real, 權實不二門
