Basic Meaning: ten mental stages

Senses:

  • Ten stages of mental or spiritual development articulated by Kūkai 空海 of the Japanese Shingon school 眞言. This list was developed by based on the Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經:
    1. 異生羝羊心 an unenlightened man or sheep. The lowest type of existence, in which the mind is concerned only with satisfying desires and has no moral awareness.
    2. 愚童持齋心 a foolish child trying to keep precepts. This includes Confucian social morality and the Buddhist precepts.
    3. 嬰童無畏心 the boldness of a child. One who seeks rebirth in heaven, having turned his back on this world.
    4. 唯蘊無我心 one who believes that there are only aggregates and no self—the śrāvaka.
    5. 拔業因種心 one who seeks to pull out the seeds of karma. One who contemplates the twelve links of dependent arising—a pratyekabuddha.
    6. 他緣大乘心 the Great Vehicle practitioner who contemplates the other-dependent nature. A Yogâcāra practitioner.
    7. 覺心不生心 one who cultivates awareness of the mind being unarisen—a Madhyamaka.
    8. 一道無爲心 unconditioned mind of the single path—a follower of Tiantai.
    9. 極無自性心 one who fathoms the teaching of no self-nature—a Huayan master.
    10. 祕密莊嚴心 one who has attained the secret teaching—a follower of esoteric Buddhism. 〔祕密漫荼羅十住心論 T 2425.77.303c29
