Basic Meaning: Sutra on the Ten Stages

Senses:

  • The Shizhu jing. K 98, T 286; Skt. Daśabhūmika-sūtra, 4 fascicles. Translation by  鳩摩羅什: (see K 95). (Skt. Daśa-bhūmika, Daśa-bhūmîśvara). Also known by the title 菩薩十住經. The site of the sermon is the maṇi-jeweled hall of the gods who have power over the emanations of others 他化自在天. As the buddhas gather, Vajragarbha Bodhisattva 金剛藏菩薩 emerges, taking on the buddhas supranormal powers and entering a deep state of absorption, from which he explains the teaching of the ten stages to Liberation Moon Bodhisattva 解脫月菩薩. Alternative translations of this same work include: (l) 漸備一切智德經 (T 285; five fasc.; trans. Dharmarakṣa 竺法護). (2) The Twelve Fascicle Translation of the Ten Stages 十住經 (十二卷) (trans. Nie Daozhen 聶道眞, missing). (3) The five-fascicle, ten stages chapter 十地品 of the sixty-fascicle Huayan jing 華嚴經 (T 278, translated by Buddhabhadra 佛陀跋陀羅). (4) The sūtra section of the 十地經論 (translated by Bodhiruci 菩提流支 and Ratnamati 勒那摩提). (5) The six-fascicle ten-stages chapter 十地品 of the eighty-fascicle version of the Huayan jing 華嚴經 (T 279; trans.
