Basic Meaning: eighteen stages

Senses:

  • Eighteen levels of cultivation abodes 修住 taught in the Madhyânta-vibhāga. The differences in the Chinese terminology are those between Paramârthaʼs rendering (T 1599) and Xuanzangʼs rendering (T 1600):
    1. 因位 The level of cause (hetvâvasthā), which refers to people who already abide in their lineages.
    2. 入位 The level of entry (avatārâvasthā), which includes people who have generated the mind of enlightenment 發心.
    3. 行位 (加行位) The level of applied practice (prayogâvasthā), which includes people who have generated the mind of enlightenment but have not attained fruition.
    4. 果位 The level of attainment (phalâvasthā), which refers to the attainment of fruition.
    5. 有功用位 (有所作位) The level of effort (sa-karaṇīyâvasthā), which is [the level of the saints] who are in training 有學.
    6. 無功用位 (無所作位) The level of effortlessness (akaraṇīyâvasthā), which is [the level of] adepts who are beyond training (aśaikṣa) 無學.
    7. 勝德位 (殊勝位) The level of special qualities (viśeṣâvasthā), which includes those who have attained the six superknowledges according to their wish.
    8. 有上位 The non-supreme level (uttarâvasthā), which denotes the practitioners who have surpassed the levels of the śrāvakas and other saints yet have not entered the first bodhisattva ground.
    9. 無上位 The supreme level (anuttarâvasthā), which is the level of Buddha-tathāgatas; there is no separate level beyond this one.
    10. 願樂位 (勝解行位) The level of conviction (adhimuktyâvasthā), which refers to the level of the practice of all resolute convictions [of the bodhisattvas].
    11. 入位 (證入位) The level of entering (praveśâvasthā), which is the first bodhisattva ground 初地.
    12. 出離位 The level of going-forth (niryāṇâvasthā), which includes the six stages after the first bodhisattva ground.
    13. 受記位 The level of receiving assurance (vyākaraṇâvasthā), which is the eighth bodhisattva ground 第八地.
    14. 能說師位 (辯說位) The level of eloquence; the master capable of instructing (kathikatvâvasthā), which is the ninth bodhisattva ground 第九地.
    15. 灌頂位 The level of initiation (abhiṣekâvasthā), which is the bodhisattvas tenth ground 第十地.
    16. 至得位 (證得位) The level of attainment (prāptyâvasthā), which is the dharma body 法身 of the buddhas.
    17. 功德位 (勝利位) The level of merits (anuśaṃsâvasthā), the response body 應身 of the buddhas.
    18. 作事位 (成所作位) The level of accomplishing works (kṛtyânuṣṭhānâvasthā), which is the emanation body 化身 of buddhas.
