Basic Meaning: Scripture on the Ten Powers

Senses:

  • Two translations of this text are contained in the Taishō, T 780, translated by Utpalavīrya 勿提提犀魚, which has the full title of 佛說十力經, and T 781, translated by Dānapāla 施護 with the full title of 佛說佛十力經 (also called 佛十力經). Both are one fascicle in length. The Buddha explains for the bhikṣus the ten powers 十力, which are listed in this text as the powers of:
    1. knowledge of right and wrong 處非處智力;
    2. knowledge of karmic ripening; 業異熟智力;
    3. knowledge of all meditative practices 靜慮解脫等持智力;
    4. knowledge of the relative capacities of beings 根上下智力;
    5. knowledge of the desires and intentions of beings 種種樂欲勝解刹別智力;
    6. knowledge of all composite factors of things 種種諸界智力;
    7. knowledge of all future destinies of beings in their transmigratory paths 遍趣行智力;
    8. knowledge of past lives 宿住智力;
    9. knowledge of the places of birth and death of beings 死生智力;
    10. knowledge of the means and ends of extinction of afflictions 漏盡智力.
