十波羅蜜

Basic Meaning: ten perfections

Senses:

  • The ten pāramitās. Ten Mahāyāna practices which are enumerated based on the original six pāramitās 六波羅蜜, to which the four of skillful means 方便, vow , power , and wisdom 般若 are added. In the Faxiang school 法相宗, these ten are attached to the ten bodhisattva stages 十地. The ten are:
    1. the perfection of giving 施波羅蜜 (dāna-pāramitā);
    2. the perfection of morality 戒波羅蜜 (śīla-pāramitā);
    3. the perfection of forbearance 忍波羅蜜 (kṣānti-pāramitā);
    4. the perfection of effort 精進波羅蜜 (vīrya-pāramitā);
    5. the perfection of meditation 禪波羅蜜 (dhyāna-pāramitā);
    6. the perfection of wisdom (that discerns the inner principle of things) 般若波羅蜜 (prajñā-pāramitā);
    7. (the perfection of skillful means 方便波羅蜜 (upāya-pāramitā);
    8. the perfection of the vow (to attain enlightenment) 願波羅蜜 (praṇidhāna-pāramitā);
    9. the perfection of oneʼs powers 力波羅蜜 (bala-pāramitā); and
    10. the perfection of omniscience 智波羅蜜 (jñāna-pāramitā).
