Basic Meaning: twelve hundred and fifty people
Senses:
The 1,250, the round number of disciples who are indicated as being in attendance at Śākyamuniʼs lectures in many of the popular scriptures, such as the Diamond Sutra. They were formerly non-Buddhists, but were converted. They include: the fifty followers of Yaśas 耶舍, five hundred of Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa 優樓頻羅迦葉, two hundred and fifty each of Nadī-Kāśyapa 那提迦葉 and Gayā –Kāśyapa 伽耶迦葉, and one hundred of Śāriputra 舍利弗 and Mahāmaudgalyāyana 目犍連.
