Basic Meaning: Nanquan Puyuan

Senses:

  • (748–835) Major Chan teacher of the Tang 唐代, one of the most cited figures in the gong'an 公案 literature. He was a disciple of Mazu 馬祖, and the teacher of Doyun 道允. One of the best known gong'ans featuring Nanquan is the one titled 'Nanquan kills the cat'  南泉斬貓. 〔佛祖統紀 T 2035.49.385a27〕 [Charles Muller]
