Basic Meaning: namu daishi henjō kongō
Senses:
A mantra recited by pilgrims on the 88 temple Shikoku pilgrimage founded by Kūkai on their pilgrimage from one temple to the next. The daishi (great teacher) indicated here is Kūkai 空海 (744–835). Henjō kongō 遍昭金剛 represents both the Great Sun Buddha and Kūkai. Reciting this mantra invokes both, who accompany the pilgrim on his way. In this context it also means that one is always accompanied dōgyō ninin 同行二人. [M. Hosak]
