Basic Meaning: seven major temples of the southern court
Senses:
The seven major temples of Nara, also abbreviated as 七大寺.The ancient major administrative temples in Nara at first included the three of Daikandaiji 大官大寺, Kawahara 川原寺, and Asukadera 飛鳥寺. After this, Yakushiji 藥師寺 was added, making it four 四大寺. From 710, the number became five, including Dai'anji 大安寺, Yakushiji 藥師寺, Gangōji 元興寺, Kōfukuji 興福寺, and Tōdaiji 東大寺, each representing a different school. To this were added Saidaiji 西大寺 and Hōryūji 法隆寺. When the capital was moved to Heiankyō 平安京 in 794, this group of temples received this appellation. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Iwanami]
