Basic Meaning: four stages in reversal of the [saṃsāric] flow
Senses:
In explaining the process that occurs in the activation of enlightenment 始覺, the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith 起信論 teaches four stages of progress toward perfect enlightenment: (1) nonenlightenment 不覺; (2) enlightenment in appearance 相似覺; (3) approximate enlightenment 隨分覺, and (4) total enlightenment 究竟覺. They are named as such because their movement is against the flow of ignorant birth and death, back to the origin of thusness. Also called 四覺. Among these, the stage of nonenlightenment is equivalent to the level of worldlings 凡夫, enlightenment in appearance is equivalent to the level of the practitioners of the two vehicles 二乘 and the bodhisattvas in the three worthy stages 三賢, approximate enlightenment is associated with the stage of the first to ninth bodhisattva grounds 初地, 九地, and the final stage is seen as equivalent to the tenth bodhisattva ground 十地.
