Basic Meaning: invocation
Senses:
Oral invocation of the Buddhaʼs name, esp. the name of Amitâbha Buddha 阿彌陀佛, as 南無阿彌陀佛, in Pure Land 淨土宗 practice. More fully termed as 口稱念佛. Along with contemplative mindfulness of the Buddha 觀想念佛 and awareness of the Buddha in his true form (Dharmakāya) 實相念佛, counted as one of three or four kinds of mindfulness of the Buddha 三種念佛/四種念佛.
