Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Catalogue of Ancient and Modern (Prince Shōtoku Biographies)

Senses:

  • The Kokon mokuroku shō. A two-volume work composed by Kenshin 顯眞 of Hōryūji 法隆寺. The first volume was completed in 1238 and the second volume, which was started in 1230, was completed in 1239. The text, also referred to as A Catalogue of Ancient and Modern Prince Shōtoku Biographies 聖德太子傳古今目錄抄 and A Private Record of the Prince Shōtoku Biographies 聖德太子傳私記, contains a large collection of information on Hōryūji and mysteries associated with the Prince Shōtoku biographies. The first volume describes information on the Shōtoku biographies, as well as Hōryūjiʼs annual events, the Prince Jōgū Temple 上宮王院 [also known as Hōryūjiʼs Eastern Temple 法隆寺東院], the relics hall 舍利殿, and the main hall 金堂. The second volume includes information on the secret oral transmission of the Prince Shōtoku biographies associated with Shōtokuʼs retainer Chōshi Maro 調使麻呂 [also written as 調使丸 and 調使麿], and also describes the inscriptions on the statues in the main hall, the origins of Hōryūjiʼs buildings, and the history of Tachibanadera 橘寺, Chūgūji 中宮寺, Hōkiji 法起寺, Hōrinji 法輪寺, and Ryūdenji 龍田寺.Kenshin, a direct descendant of Chōshi Maro 調使麻呂, emphasizes that he alone received the direct oral transmission of the secrets of Hōryūji and the Prince Shōtoku biographies from his teacher Ryūsen 隆詮. Based on this transmission, Kenshin was venerated by monks who worshipped Prince Shōtoku as one vested with a special authority in matters of faith in the prince. Kenshin later became the founder of a lineage of oral transmission of this information. As such, the text provides not only important information on Hōryūji, but also on the development of faith in Prince Shōtoku during the Middle Ages. Kenshinʼs own handwritten manuscript was offered to the Imperial Household in 1878, but was later transferred to the Tokyo National Museum. The text appears in: the Complete Works of Japanese Buddhist 大日本佛教全書, the Ikaruga Collection 鵤叢刊, and the Compilation of Historical Documents of Hōryūji 法隆寺史料集成 no. 4.
