Basic Meaning: Kogetsu Zenzai
Senses:
(1667–1751) An Edo 江戶 period monk of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗. He was the Dharma heir of Kengan Zen'etsu 賢巖禪悅 from Tafukuji temple 多福寺 in Bungo 豐後
(present-day Ōita Prefecture 大分). Later he became the head priest of Daikōji 大光寺 in Hyūga 日向 (present-day Miyazaki 宮崎 Prefecture) and had also established Fukujuji 福聚寺 in Chikugo 筑後 (present-day Fukuoka 福岡 Prefecture) and Jitakuji 自得寺 temple in Yokosuka 橫須賀 (Kanagawa 神奈川 Prefecture). At the time Kogetsuʼs popularity competed with his famous Rinzai master - Hakuin 白隱(1686–1769). Like Hakuin Kogetsu had practiced under several different masters in his youth, and later established his own teaching line – the Kogetsu Line 古月派. For several generations considerable rivalry appears to have existed between Kogetsuʼs and Hakuinʼs lineages. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): Yokoi, Sasaki]
