只管打坐

Basic Meaning: meditation of just sitting

Senses:

  • Also written 祗管打坐. The Zen form of meditation chiefly associated with the Sōtō school 曹洞宗, which places emphasis on emptying the mind, in contrast to the kōan 公案 method. 只管 is a term originating from the Song period 宋代, meaning 'exclusively,' 'earnestly,' 'concentratedly,' etc. Thus, sitting without thinking about any kind of goal.
