Basic Meaning: presence in similar instances and absence in dissimilar instances
Senses:
In Buddhist logic 因明, the second of the nine possible conditions of a reason in a syllogism based on its properties 九句因. For instance, a Vaiśeṣika said:
"Sound is impermanent, Because it is produced. Like a pot and unlike space."
The property of being produced is present in similar instances and absent in dissimilar instances. (From Kuijiʼs explanatory notes to the Hetucakra). Valid.
